A surefire way to feel “washed up”

Sometimes, multitasking is a necessity.
Every parent is aware of this fact. Get the kids up for school, get them dressed, make sure they brush their teeth, make sure they eat breakfast, make sure everyone has their school supplies… Is that everything? Oh, right. You forgot to eat, brush your teeth, and now you’re going to be late to work if you decide to handle those particular things now.
Instead, mornings are a mad mambo of organized chaos. Bagel in one hand, phone in the other, family dog running between your legs, kids yelling… It’s a wonder anything gets done.
Now imagine this: you wake up to a sink full of dishes. The kids are still asleep, and maybe there’s time to load the sink up and get them done before they wake up. You plug the drain, add dish soap to the basin, and turn on the water. While it’s filling up, you think to yourself “maybe there’s time to feed the dog, too”. Patting yourself on the back, you grab the dogfood bag and go to fill Spot’s bowl.
“MOMMMM!!”
You’ve been found out. Billy is awake and suddenly the morning light seems much too bright, much too harsh.
You throw the dog food back into place and rush upstairs in time to intervene in a fight between the kids. With a temporary armistice agreed upon, you go about your morning routine. Bagel in hand, phone in the other, rush downstairs and…
There’s two inches of water covering the kitchen and dining room floors, respectively. The kitchen sink has flooded, a soapy mess erupting out of the basin.
Well, so much for “organized chaos”.
